East Coast Roundup Summer 2000 Review:
The Northeastern Region Roundup 2000 was held at Hidden Valley Lake Campground near Kingston New York, off of interstate route 87.
Hi everyone,
Well, the big event is behind us once again. The weather was very cooperative and did not
rain on us. It was just a bit hotter than it needed to be though. Bob and Ginny brought
their 1965 Silver Eagle that they bought new in 1966. It really is in nice condition
thanks to Bob's handiwork. Bob and April were there in the 1977 Ramada (Inn) that Bob
spent many hours bringing back to a very nice collectible trailer. They have only had it
for about a year and have already learned how to dig two holes for the jack stands to
stabilize it. Val and I were there in our 1966 Raven, our third Roundup, which is the
price I pay for being the coordinator.
We all spent Friday night getting set up for the weekend. A nice chat session around the
campfire took us almost into the midnight hour. That of course lead to a late morning of
going our separate ways. Bob and Ginny went on a cruise on the Hudson River. Bob and April
went to get the flat fixed and did some local historical site searching. You would be
surprised to know that a historic Viking site is nearby on the property. Plus a couple of
other very interesting tid bits about other areas. They were definitely asking Mickey (the
owner) the right questions. Val and I went in search of yard sales and dish detergent. Ken
and Jane stopped in to say hello and see our campers. They live relatively close by but
could not join us for the whole weekend. Maybe next time.
The evening potluck dinner was another success. Even though there were only three Apaches
there, there was more than enough food again. Topped off with interesting and lively
conversation around another campfire well into the evening.
Of course, there was the standard question...am I planning to do another gathering
later this fall? The answer to that depends on all of you. There can't be a
gathering if no one shows up for it. It would be nice to get the southeastern Apache
owners together for one. Or even those who live in the mid- and western sections of PA and
NY. I'll repeat the criteria that I use for selecting the destination for the Roundup- I
choose the site based on the responses and commitment of you who wish to come. It was
suggested that I choose a place and date and see who shows, but I don't want to be the
only person there. Anyone interested in getting together in September, or October? Val did post one warning though... it won't be the weekend
of September 23 if I know what is good for me (I'm best man at a wedding that weekend).
Let me know via email at JRLockard@enter.net and
I'll keep track of the interested people. Please supply a choice of dates that you
believe would be good for you. I have come to accept that many things change and
people just can't make it all of the time.

East Coast Roundup - Fall 2000 Review
The Fall East Coast Roundup was held at the Deer Run Campground in Schaghticoke, NY on October 6-8, 2000.
Hi everyone, I have had to thaw out a bit before I could get this out. The East Coast October Roundup at Deer Run was great! We had 5 Apache campers and one...uh... non-Apache there. Dave and Theresa and their two boys were there from Canada. It was only a 7 hour trip for them! Dennis and Jane joined us from NY. Ken and Jane with their two boys joined us from NY. Pete and his family were there with a couple of his friends from NY. A couple that didn't know anything about the get together, Andy and Louise and their boys, were there on the other side of the campground. And of course, Val and I were there too. Two couples from NH couldn't make it due to snow!
Friday was the usual arrival routine. Some early, some late, but we all arrived safely. We gathered together after dark and enjoyed a very nice camp fire while sipping our cider and rum beverages (thanks to Dennis and Jane). Then off to bed where the furnaces and heaters kept us from freezing overnight.
Saturday was a nice sunny day and would have been warmer if it wasn't for the breeze. We started to get back together just before the trick-or-treat happening in the afternoon. From there it all just "happened". We had another overwhelming pot luck dinner. It was the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend and Dave and Theresa brought a roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, wine, and pies for dessert. Ken and Jane whipped up a tasty barbecue and kielbasa mix. Dennis and Jane brought out a huge pot of a Calico bean mixture that was absolutely delicious. Val mixed up a tasty chicken stroganoff over noodles. All I could come up with was camp-made sourdough rolls and pineapple-up-side-down cake, again.
We pooled our firewood and kept the camping heater going until after 11PM. Dave even tried to warm up the whole campground with his infrared LP fired heater. A very enjoyable evening of conversation with the kids keeping everyone on their toes. Amazing how the kids and the moths are drawn toward the fire. We didn't try to keep the moths out though. Dennis did a fantastic job of keeping the sparks flying while making sure that the fire poker didn't get too cooled down. We livened it up a bit with a couple pieces of "Blue Oak" that we had left. It is amazing how relaxing it is watching a campfire.
Saturday morning was an attempt at a disorganized pancake breakfast. Maybe better planning on my part next time? Dennis brought along a pile of Apache information including some repair information to share with the group. And about that time it was check-out time. I guess we'll be planning another one or two for the 2001 summer season. I know that they have been worth the time and effort as we have met some terrific people at every one.
Thanks for your support,
Jim and Val (1999-2000 Eastern Region Apache
Roundup Coordinators) (aren't titles neat?)
Midwest Apache Roundup - Summer 2000 Review
The Midwest Region Roundup 2000 was held at Baraboo Hills campground in Baraboo
Wisconsin.
The y2k Apache Round Up was a resounding success. We had a total of 9 Apache Campers
there, 8 were official and 1 was a surprise, a 76 Ramada 2 sites down! We invited the
folks over to the bonfire and found out they didn't even plan on being at this campground.
They arrived late at night and didn't notice us there. In the morning they were surprised
to see another Apache!, then another and another and..... Turns out they are as dedicated
to their Apache as the rest of us were, so we have 2 new Apache campers. Talk about karma!
We also had 1 gal drive up from Lincoln IL, she wasn't able to reserve a campsite so she
was unable to bring her trailer but showed up none the less!
As always the camaraderie was great. Paul brought the mother load of Apache parts for us
to scrounge through and I'd bet all of us got something. Best part was he was GIVING the
parts away! Talk about
Apache Spirit!
We had folks come from Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri! There was a great variety of
Apaches present from the Smallest early 60's Silver Eagle, the smallest hardside Mesa, up
to the biggest hardside, the
Ramada. The fanciest had to be Tim's Cimmaron II with a hard walled bathroom, full size
stand up closet and FACTORY AIR CONDITIONING!
We all got to have the pleasure of the Apache Open House where we showed off our campers.
We were all amazed that although very similar, no 2 Apaches were identical, even those of
the same vintage.
The weekends highlight was the Pot Luck dinner. Everyone brought their favorite dish to
pass and we ate like Kings (and queens).
There were plenty of kids there, six all together. The funny thing was that 4 of them were
3 year olds! The kids had a great time playing with each other and the parents got to
commiserate on the joys of having a 3
year old.
The bonfire was a blast, we even got a visit from "Ranger Rick" who warned us
"Rowdies" to keep it down. I think his ego is feeling better now. We sat around
and told or made up Apache stories and camping tales. We shared stories of how we got our
camper, our favorite camping places and Pudgie Pies........
Although the weekend officially ended Sunday, many of us stayed Sunday night. Paul went on
a wood gathering expedition and hauled in the mother load of oak for the evening fire. The
big hit of the evening
fire was the ....
PUDGIE PIE! For those who don't know, a pudgie pie is 2 slices of bread filled with pie
filling and baked on the fire in a sandwich iron. This is best explained as CAMP FOOD
NIRVANA! We were trying different
combinations of Pudgie Pies when what could be the hit of the night was created, the
cinnamon raisin bread cinnamon apple filling pudgie pie. After this combo, a couple of
campers reached POST PUDGIE PARTUM and fell asleep. See the picture of our Pudgie Pie King
below.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of the Pudgie Pie, we were batting around ideas for
other pudgie pie combinations. Next years round up will include a Pudgie Pie bake-off, so
get those recipes going!
I would have to say the 2000 Apache Camper Round-Up was a great success. We met up with
many old friends and many new friends were made. For many of us it was like Christmas in
July, seeing all those
old campers together reminded me of the 1970s all over again..... and that is never bad...
We had so much fun, I would like to try for a mini-round up in September some time. I have
to keep it close to home since the wife will be very pregnant by then, so I was thinking
of trying Starved Rock area again?
Email me if you're interested and I'll set it up.
Camp On or is it Pudge On now?
Harry K Your y2K Apache Round up
coordinator.
Camping karma
We would like to send our thanks out to the whole crew out at Baraboo Hills! Thank you so
much for making our weekend a great experience! We are the additional apache people from 2
lots down. It was a surprise to see so many people so passionate about their campers. We
are now planning some major projects to get the apache as nice as all of the ones at the
campground. We are looking forward to seeing everyone again at the next event. I see Harry
wants to plan a trip in September to starved rock. Hope we can attend if it happens.
Thanks again for everything and please let all of the others know we appreciated the
hospitality. Jeanne & Ron
p.s. after we told my father that one of the other campers had lost a tire and really tore
up the camper he said, "How do you think yours got beat up?" I guess my uncle
lost a tire right after they bought it in 1976 & before he even pulled it off of the
lot!
Thanks to all the wonderful folks who volunteered their time to coordinate their area's Roundup! Perhaps you'd like to host a Roundup in your neck of the woods - maybe even a different country! Email the webmaster @ doug@apachepopups.com & get listed!
Remember - the National Apache Roundup is coming in 2002!!!!
